Let your body and life direct you to what you need and when. Here are some suggestions to help you get started:

Brief Relaxation: Listen to this instead of taking a coffee break. Use it before or after a stressful event, or whenever you need a time out.

Heart and Lungs Relaxation: This will help you transition from work to home. You can also use it to ward off an incipient anxiety or panic attack, or to relieve one that has already started.

Total Body Relaxation: Use this one to help you fall asleep, or to go back to sleep if you awaken during the night. It is especially effective when you are exhausted after a long hard day or after traveling.

Best of all, your relaxation skills will improve with repeated practice. You will become more efficient at making the switch from activity to relaxation. As you do, you will start off more relaxed and go deeper into relaxation.

Yoga teachers and students can look to this program to support to their practice. Physicians and other health care professionals will find it useful for their patients and clients. Readers of Back Care Basics can use it to complement chapter 5.

“I have used the Relaxation Basics CD for many years. My now deceased parents used the audio cassette version for many years, too, nearly every day, and it's one of the things that I believe contributed to their optimistic attitudes in old age and to their longevity.

As technology changes and CDs slowly, but surely, become a thing of the past, I hope Dr. Schatz will consider turning the Relaxation Basics recordings into an accessible digital format such as MP3 or MP4. As soon as it is available in that format, I will buy it. If you could notify me if and when the new format is offered, I would appreciate it very much. In the meantime, I will continue to use and enjoy the CD version.”

John Hastings, author of The Guitar Fret-Staff System and The Drawing Breakthrough Book (, July 2013

"I'm a yoga teacher and occasionally use the 15 and 30 minute segments at the end of a class. Students always rave about Dr. Schatz voice and the fact that it relaxes them so swiftly and thoroughly. I expect to be using the CD myself for many years. The variety in the length of the four sequences makes it very useful and appealing."
